Sonya Tanae Fort: I See You

The work of Sonya Tanae Fort is a visual diary and ode to the places and people who have woven into her life to become core to her identity.

This exhibition includes images of her home and family in Massachusetts, as well as her deep connections to Cape Verde.  Place, family, and self-identity are integral to her work, and through her process she creates a space that unites themes of love, belonging, community, memory, and self-awareness.

Sonya Tanae Fort has spent considerable time in Cape Verde, on the islands of Maio and Fogo, but the country has been a part of her life since childhood.  Brockton, the artist’s hometown, has the largest concentration of people of Cape Verdean descent in the country.  Fort’s photographs capturing daily life were taken during a trip to Cape Verde in 2024.  The works she created were her “visual journey capturing the everyday beauty, tradition, and rhythms of life in Cape Verde.”
