Meta Warrick Fuller and the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art

The Danforth Art Museum and Danforth Art School are collaborating to present the Meta Fuller Series, a set of gallery talks and workshops highlighting the life and work of this important American artist. As steward of a special collection of Meta Fuller’s work on permanent display in the museum, the Danforth has developed this series to provide a deeper look into various perspectives and processes employed by the artist over time.

Each gallery talk will be paired with an art making workshop.  Both talk and workshop will be presented virtually with Zoom.  Workshop participants will be mailed the supplies needed for that workshop class.

Gallery Talk presented via Zoom by Sara MacDonald

Why did Meta Warrick Fuller attend the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art (PMSIA, now the University of the Arts in Philadelphia), and what did she learn there? What is a school of industrial art as opposed to a fine art school? Not only did Warrick Fuller earn her diploma from PMSIA; she returned at least twice for additional classes and was a long-time member of the Alumni Association. Explore this little-known part of Fuller’s education and learn about turn-of-the-20th-century art education.

Workshop in the Studio presented by Susan Bauer

During Meta Fuller’s time at the school of Industrial art, her studies involved a great deal of drawing from life, specifically focusing on geometric and plant forms. Join faculty member Susan Bauer in this relaxing drawing workshop, following some of the processes Mrs. Fuller learned to create a series of lovely drawings of sculptural plants.  No experience required. All supplies included and shipped to participants.
