Sonic Improvisations

Join us!
Experience immersive sound as you view Tim McDonald’s artwork in The Diamond Sea. Christian Gentry (aka Maribo), Associate Professor of Music at Framingham State University, will create soundscapes through a solo performance and an improvisation in reflection and response to the art on display.
    • 1-3 pm – Museum visitors are invited to experience viewing the art surrounded by sonic interpretation.
    • 3 pm – Christian Gentry and Tim McDonald will discuss their unique collaboration as musician and visual artist.

Attendance during the sonic interpretation is fluid. Feel free to sit and listen to all the soundscapes, or wander in and out of the performance as you browse other galleries.

Christian Gentry (aka Maribo)

Christian Gentry (aka Maribo) works as a sound artist, composer, and performer in the Boston area. Most of his concert works are chamber or solo works that often incorporate fixed or live electronic elements. Some of his recent works were exhibited and/or performed at Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria) Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Mazmanian Gallery (Framingham State University), Akron Art Museum, Brigham Young University, Westminster College, Verspiel (New Orleans), and Southeastern Louisiana University. As a sound artist, Gentry collaborates with other musicians, artists, and poets. Gentry received his training at University of Utah (BM), University of Louisville (MM) and Brandeis University (PhD). He is currently an Associate Professor of Music at Framingham State University teaching a variety of courses in electronic music composition, music theory, performance, popular music history, and audio production.

 

Tim McDonald

Tim McDonald is an artist and professor at Framingham State University where he has taught painting and drawing courses since 2006. He received B.A.s in Studio Art and English from the University of Rhode Island in 1983, and an M.F.A. in Painting from East Tennessee State University in 2005. Currently, Tim’s first solo museum exhibition entitled The Diamond Sea is on view at the Danforth Art Museum through June 8, 2025. He has exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions in galleries both regionally and nationally, including Tyger Tyger Gallery in Asheville, NC. Tim’s artwork is in several collections including the Fidelity Bank Collection, Albion College in Michigan, and Tusculum College in Tennessee.
