Oil on canvas
Over a career that spanned more than six decades, Grace Hartigan explored varied stylistic approaches, beginning with a unique approach to Abstract Expressionism inspired by the work of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. While drawn to abstraction, Hartigan never completely broke from the figurative tradition, repeatedly referencing both contemporary culture and art history in her works. Hartigan remains a seminal figure of mid-century American art, a powerful woman who often ironically commented on the male-dominated art world in her works.
