Celebrating 50 Years of Collecting

Recognizing a need for a visual arts institution between Worcester and Boston, a grassroots group of passionate individuals established the Danforth Art Museum and School in downtown Framingham in 1975.

Over 50 years, two locations, and the merger with Framingham State University, the Museum has experienced shifts in exhibition and collecting patterns. Today, the Permanent Collection reflects this evolution, consisting of almost 4,000 objects of American art across a wide variety of media.  Rotating once a year, new artworks and themes are exhibited which allows for a snapshot of the breadth of the collection.

The Permanent Collection remains organic, growing, and changing to reflect the role of the Museum as a part of the University and the community. Curated by students AJ Green and Jennifer Koeller alongside Jessica Roscio and Rachel Passannante, this year’s Permanent Collection exhibition highlights recent acquisitions from local artists alongside works chosen by Danforth staff and our community.  From 19th century landscapes and Boston Figurative Expressionism, to contemporary photography and sculpture, these works inspire us, speak to us, or make us think.
